Dear All
I thought I'd suggest (nay, demand) a change to the way in which the SWC works.
I've spoken to a few of you on unrelated matters and the largest single issue appears to be time (as opposed to time signatures!)
The most important part of a songwriting club is...the songs. We want as many people as possible to contribute every month to give the broadest choice. I know as well as any of you that it's tricky in a busy world to find the time to write and record a song.
I have noticed that the EXTRA bit of the SWC (writing reviews) can be a little arduous. I've also noticed (and god knows I'm as guilty as anyone) that we are either repeating criticism/praise or desperately trying to find new adjectives to describe songs that we're either passionate or lukewarm about.
So I'm proposing henceforth that when it comes to the taxing and time-consuming task of listening and writing detailed comments, there is now no pressure to write a review on each song. It is now perfectly acceptable (and should not be frowned upon) to just vote (or not vote at all!!) The forum will look the same so if one desperately WANTS to comment, no one will stand in your way, the difference is that there is now no pressure to comment.
Sometime today, I will copy this email and put it as a new forum discussion to allow you to comment publicly about this new 'policy'. But from next month, this will come into affect and I sincerely hope that we can get some of our missing members back on board.

Also, more than one member has indicated their desire to collaborate. This is absolutely fine and I for one would like to say I'm perfectly willing (when available) to add vocals, bass or drum programming to any songs that any of you feel would benefit from it. I know we had 'Collaboration' month which I thought was hugely successful. We will do that again but in the mean time, feel free to get in touch with me or other fellow SWC members (through me if you're unsure of their contact details) to start a songwriting/recording partnership.
I remember an idea from ages ago was a kind of musical 'pass-the-parcel'. I'm not too sure how this would work in practice but I'm open to ideas (though it would be something that, I suspect, would 'bubble' for many months. Or maybe not.)

Not that it matters because, as you said, its not a democracy, the points I strongly agree with are:
The songs are absolutely the main thing. I enjoy the writing/recording process and, without the SWC I would do nothing. I have also enjoyed the creativity, wit, and ingenuity of the other contributors.
The voting is the least important part of the whole process.
The comments do have a familiar ring to them after a while (says me with my Lou Reed vocals).
Where I slightly disagree is regarding the comments. Without them we may just be shouting into the void. Perhaps if we promised not to be offended by anyone's comments (if we get a bad review), we wouldn't have to worry about being repetitive. There are dangers in saying anything in a text format but, hey! we're all grown ups. We know that we all just want a few people to hear the songs we've worked on. So, if you think my guitar playing us unacceptably baggy, or my talking vocals are getting on your nerves or, the song is just a bit boring and you couldn't face listening to it a second time, that's the kind of thing I'd be happy to hear.
The real difficulty is separating the song writing from the performance/production.

The feedback from others is a real help in improving songs. I feel that we've all acted on aspects of gentle criticism to try to make subsequent songs better. And nice comments give us confidence to keep writing. Although I understand that it can take a while, the exchange of reviews views is a major strength of the group.
