With next month's 'Camp-fest', I thought it would be good for us to try and create our own Eurovision winner. I haven't worked out the voting yet, but it would be cool if we could vote on the night of the real Eurovision Song Contest. The entries can be any variety of Eurovision entry from the sublime (Abba, Brotherhood of Man(!) or Jordi) to the ridiculous (Jedward or The singing Russian grannies.) It can be 'Euro-pop' or a ballad and everything in between.

Good task - do we also have to submit costume designs for the show?

For Eurovision month, can we do lyrics in Flemish?
Just to get all this straight - this week we have to submit our lurv song, then during February we're swapping lyrics (which means giving the other songwriter something to work on asap), and by the end of March we send in our Eurovision entry?
Personally I'm not too keen on the instrumental idea - we just had a symphony. And in my book, vocals are what turn music into song. Doesn't matter if they're "good" or "bad". Just ask Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen or almost anyone French. If you want to strip things down, how about a single-instrument month?

It's 'lurv' month (January for February voting) Then 'Theme Music' month (February for March voting) Then it is what was going to be 'improvers' month but is fast turning into 'collaboration' month (March for April voting) THEN 'Eurovision' month (April for May voting) and yes, foreign languages are welcome!!
The instrumental comment is interesting. I thought it gave us a new set of 'problems' to solve and gave a chance to those who are not great singers but I'm completely open to ideas if other people have similar concerns.

The next three months all sound great, Rob. Nice work.
Like Steve though I'm not that wild about another instrumental-based month in May. His idea of a one instrument/one vocal challenge sounds interesting. Or what about Metal Month?

Metal Month! Yeah, lets ROCK, bitches!
That said, I have no objection to instrumental month but, another genre task sounds fun.

I say, can one 'do' metal with the pianoforte?

Yes, as long as you play it REALLY LOUD. But seriously, I think a METAL genre task would be a good idea - out of my comfort zone and a serious challenge. For those that are less confident on the vocal front, then just SHOUT or make that weird low growling sound so beloved of the Metal bands. My son used to listen to a lot of metal and the number of sub-genres is incredible - plenty of choice out there to fit the task. Might have to ask Karl to fit a double bass drum pedal though!

Rob - did you get my lurv song? I hope so because I can't send it again till Sunday morning - after deadline. Metal month sounds great. A bit of riffery.

This link will take you to the official rules on eurovision. It may be an idea that we stick to them, although most don't really apply (no more than 6 people on stage: who cares). There are two rules that might apply. Songs should not be longer than 3 minutes (rule 1.2.1(b)) and the backing track, over which the performers sing, must contain no recorded vocals or vocal type effects. For our purposes, I guess that means no loops or samples. I take it we're all over 16 years of age? Rule 1.2.2(b) is very specific. www.eurovision.tv/upload/press-downloads/2015/2014-09-02_2015_ESC_rules_EN_PUBLIC_RULES.pdfI wonder if, in the rules not freely available to the public, there's a clause that says: 'if the jury thinks the public has been voting with their dicks, we reserve the right to ignore what they say.'

The 3 minute rule sounds sensible. The rule about backing tracks doesn't seem relevant as we're not performing the song at the contest (or are we?). I don't think we should impose any other limitation (just song length). I'm looking forward to this task immensely.

Another thought on how we vote for this. Watching the eurovision song contest I feel quite happy about picking the winners and, more amusingly, losers after hearing most the songs for the first time. I wonder if we should do the same for our voting? I probably say this because my own song will not stand much scrutiny.

Hi guys? Have I missed some vital instruction? I'm not clear how we vote and comment on the Eurovision songs......

Colin, in Rob's last email (dated 5th May) he said he would give details 'in a few days time.' I think he is probably thinking in 'Warner-Time,' a time zone that doesn't relate to any other time zone in any way that a non-Warner would understand. Just be patient with Warners, we'll get around to it, you don't have to nag us every six months.

Hi all, go to the 'Voting and comments' section and there are instructions there on voting...and comments!
