I have been putting this off or a while but today I had some time to review all the possible 'out there' ideas from our discussion thread.
My idea (based on a suggestion by Mike - in fact it's not 'based', it's ripped-off from Mike!) is that we construct a piece of music that has three distinct movements. The idea is that we think differently about song structure; getting us out of the rigid 'intro/verse/chorus...' ideas that we all tend to have.
My suggestion would be that you keep the three parts of the symphony short (i.e., don't make each part 5 minutes long - we're not trying to make 'Close to the Edge' here!) Even though it's off the wall, we're still trying to appeal to the masses! But ultimately it's up to you.
Any other points or questions? Put them here. And if everyone is violently opposed to this idea, please tell me. My thinking here was that there's a possibility that we may all have more time during December to conquer this tricky task. My thinking may be skewed horribly!

I'm happy with the mini- symphony idea and look forward to breaking free of the verse chorus shackles for one month at least.

Yep, agree with Mike. It's kind of a Prog rock genre task.

Brilliant idea - I'll probably end up with a symphony in two verses and a chorus....

I don't know where you all find the time - a whole album of Christmas songs then a symphony? Even Mozart would have been pushed, and it was his full-time job. So, a couple of questions: - a symphony is usually instrumental, I believe, though Beethoven's Ninth has an ode at the end. I'm assuming words are allowed, though optional? - and can a symphony last 3 minutes or less?

Stephen, this is an ideal task for using up bits of songs you have yet to finish off. A bit like bubble and squeak on Boxing Day. No one is going to be too bothered about it being in strict symphonic form (which has changed through the years). Finding something that holds the sections together may be the main difficulty, I feel.

Hi All
Songs have come in from various members for December's 'Symphony' task but I've had a request to postpone the closing date by a couple of people (me included, surprise, surprise!) So, I will close the list for entries on Tuesday 6th January but I will endeavour to upload the songs I already have on January 1st and will add the others as they appear.
I will send an email out too to announce this.
Happy New Year
