This is the place where we can discuss this slightly specialised subject. I've put it up early for reasons that I hope will become clear. So...
1. Songwriters will be sent a video (or link to a video) that will be mute. This will be a title sequence for a new drama.
2. The composition can have lyrics (think of The Sopranos or True Detectives) or it can be instrumental.
3. The title sequence will be somewhere between 30 and 45 seconds in length and the music should at least make an attempt to match this length. If you have software to output a Quicktime movie with the soundtrack that would be great. If not, just send me an .mp3 and I'll match it here.
4. The Poll for this will close early as I will need to film and edit the video so get your votes in for your favourite title.
5. I will edit this with a tempo in mind (which I will give you.) You can then choose to follow that speed or ignore it.
6. If it is thought to be helpful, I can give you a brief synopsis for our chosen drama if it will help you to compose the music.

So, after all the voting has closed, there's just going to be the one video, with the one title?

A few concerns over this task, most of which probably just me jumping the gun and it will be be obvious when we get the video.
Will timing be critical? Will there be anything we need to synchronise sound and vision (effects for walking noises or cars driving away)? You know, the sort of thing that would only appear on the television series and not on the single that is released to support it.
Do you remember in Superstars how the runners weren't allowed to do the running events? Well, as Patrick has so much experience doing this sort of thing, can we give him some kind of handicap (like only using a teac portastudio to record it on)? :-)

Sounds like a really interesting idea Rob. Will there be a prize for the least appropriate theme music? I quite fancy competing for that!

The vote is purely my attempt at a democratic process (and democracy is not something that comes easily to me!!!!) Once the most popular title has been chosen, I will then create ONE video and will also give you a general (made up) synopsis for the programme that this will be the title sequence for.
As for the technical aspect of linking the video to the sound. I think that iPad users will be able to use iMovie to import their soundtrack to the pictures to see if it matches. If not, just compose the music roughly and I'll sync it up here and put it all online. The 'natural sounds' (walking, trains, birds) etc will NOT be present and will not be required to be present. When I originally conceived this particular task (which is months and months away by the way) it was to be a very strict 'it must have vocals' task, but that rule has now been relaxed to allow this task to be good for non-singing contributors as well as those who are happy to sing.
Though Patrick would appear to have an unfair advantage, I think it would be even more galling if his contribution was better than ours even on a TEAC 144 Portastudio!
I think we should have fun with this and whether the winner is the least/most appropriate is up to voting members!!
I'll be filming it over the summer and autumn, ready to be uploaded for the beginning of October.

Due to my weekend away (30th to 1st Feb) the video will be uploaded on either the 2nd or 3rd of Feb. I will email everyone once it's live and I will also send a WeTransfer file in case there are issues with downloading/syncing the streamed video.

Rob - as I'm not technically minded and I write my songs on the iPad, I just want to check that it will be okay for my theme music to be sent in in the usual way eg by email to you.
