I often find the chords that came so naturally are the same as a song I know or have played (for example, after starting 'the love has gone' I realised I had used the same chords as 'Come Up And See Me'). Once this realisation enters my head I'm never sure if I should abandon the idea or work to disguise my inadvertent copying. Perhaps this is the result of playing in a covers band for so long (I've played lots of different songs).

There is nothing new under the sun, and every possible chord progression has been used by someone else. I'm working my way through the '577 Jazz Standards' book, playing one number exhaustively for 2-3 days, and the more I do that, the easier it gets to come up with chord sequences - but without exception, anyone who knew the jazz canon would be able to separate those sequences into bits and say '8 bars of Beautiful Love, 4 bars of St James Infirmary', etc. But who cares, if it sounds nice? And the instrumentation and production are such a huge influence on the feel of the song (hey there's another idea for a challenge, give us the plain chord sequence with no other cues, total freedom on instruments, rhythm, lyrics and production and see what comes out) where was I, that it will sound quite distinctive.
