This is where we can discuss June's 'Genre' task and vote on which genre would be most popular.

Reggae - let's put a vote in for a style I loathe! I'll draw the line at a brass section though.

Well that's nice and clear then - one vote for each style. Obviously we aren't all gay or 'musical theatre' would have won hands down. How about, the winner is the entry that includes the most genres? In a maximum of five minutes?

Doest the 5 minute rule apply if we all choose Prog?

5 mins for prog rock Tim? Hardly gets us past the intro! I say we let it go opened ended if prog wins!! Or we all write a section and then edit the whole lot together ;-)

Ha ha ha. That's hilarious (from Mark.) And in reply to Tim, I think we can stretch it beyond but no more than 7 mins (I think that by 7 mins we'll get the idea. If a composer chooses to then to an elongated version, that's up to them!

I'm not sure whether everyone has voted on this yet, but if it's a dead heat (currently between Prog Rock and Country), shall we re-vote limiting the choices to the top two?
Or shall we just go for Progressive Country Rock (not a genre I am particularly au fait with), but sounds fun.

Prog country rock! I like the sound of that. I'm just imagining the OAPs trying to line dance to all the time signature changes and the 10 min banjo solo! Lol. .....and the stage costume potential - ten gallon hat, stacked cowboy boots and a cape! Karl, this could be your next video project?

The lack of a strange time signature due to technical limitations (garage band on the iPad only supports 4/4 3/4 6/8) is truly a worry if prog wins. The other thing that worries me is I listened to an internet radio station dedicated to prog and it sounded like everyone was a Yes tribute band. I just doubt any of us could listen to that much prog and give a considered opinion without starting to like real ale, band t-shirts, and growing a goatee and long hairmy hair (male pattern baldness is not an obstacle for prog fans, it's positively a boon!). Worried I'm going to do a parody rather than a song, regardless of the genre we settle on.

I'm staring to doubt my choices. When does the voting close?

I would imagine, right at the end of May. We've settled on 'Country'. It may come across as a parody, which is good because as far as we can see, Country IS a parody. American comedian Bob Newhart had it right when he said 'I don't like Country music, but I don't denigrate those who do. And for those that do like Country music, 'denigrate' means 'put down'.'

I've just noticed the small print at the top. Doh! Voting closes at 11.30 on 31st May.

I've been doing some research on YouTube to see what it is that makes a song a 'country' song. So far the only common denominator seems to be the accent and a cowboy hat. Disappointingly few refer to box-cars or have banjo's. I'm not sure I know the difference between country and that sort of southern blues.
Has anyone else got any ideas what defines a country song?

A definition quoted on the Nashville series ( a fun show if you haven't seen it ) - Country music is "three chords and the truth" Not sure Steve will be particularly enamoured by that rather restrictive definition!

For Steve, the power of the truth is going to overcome any musical scruples he might have - just need a few more verses and I'm there. Anyone know a banjo player?

I spoke to Phil S the other night and he had similar concerns re the definition. I would say that, from the list above, 'Country' gives us the widest possible set of choices. I think, importantly, we should make the distinction between 'Country' and 'Country & Western'. I suppose one could argue that 'C&W' is just one form of 'Country'. I think the only thing this will stop us doing is making 'Pop' or 'Jazz' or 'Swing'. I have listened to 'Lady Antebellum' who I would describe as 'Country' but COULD be described as 'Rock' or makers of 'Ballads'. I'm not sure a banjo or harmonica or pedal steel guitar is a requirement.

youtu.be/QVI-SRgGz9wMore research has confirmed that country is beyond parody. I am pretty sure this is a genuine song called 'Ain't no hon key tons in jail.' Any song that can rhyme 'jail' with 'hell' is on another level to anything any of us are likely to invent.

Heard a country song on the radio the other day, it was called 'Twang'. Doesn't get more country than that!

April we had a title to work to, May we had lyrics. This is the first month I've had to decide what to write about and I'm finding it much harder than just coming up with a tune. Anyone else finding the same thing?

I started like a bullet from a gun...but I haven't done so well since the first week of June. I'm hoping inspiration will come and I am a deadline junkie so will start work on it at the very end of the month.

I've had the entire tune and a plan for the words since Day 1. It's just summoning the nerve to record it, which for some reason I find very intimidating. How I'll feel with future tasks, I don't know.

Well...I've finished. Sent it to Rob to put up.
I will never be sniffy about Country music or musicians again! That was far more difficult than my previous jazzy number. I had the lead breaks in mind, but it took dozens and DOZENS of takes to get them even nearly right. Helped that I'd bought Drum Loops HD, not that I explored its outer limits. (Mind you, when we get to the film theme challenge, the Dance / D&B 140 bpm Modern sample 6 is going to get serious use.)

So, Bob Dylan's manuscript for 'Like a Rolling Stone' fetched £2m yesterday. Anyone keeping the originals of their lyrics, just in case?

OK. For those that can't wait, I have uploaded 5 songs for your perusal. I'm pretty sure that there are at least another 5 to come (and maybe more!) For those that want to wait and listen to all the compositions in one sitting, the closing date/time is Monday at midnight (but if someone sends me a song at midnight, they'll need to wait until the morning before I upload it!)
I'll email everyone to let them know it's live once everyone's entries are in.

I'm afraid I won't be submitting this time unfortunately. I have recorded all the backing but lyrics I found a bit tough. I've also lost some time through not feeling very well. They say that you should write about what you know, but I've never heard a country song about bladder infection!! I was pretty pleased with it musically, so I'll probably recycle it, maybe for the 4 chord challenge (once I've cut about 6 chords out). Looking forward to hearing everyone's take on country.

When listening to Robbie Good's song, don't listen to it on the speakers of an iPad: it'll sound really badly mixed. I listened to it agin through big speakers and it was much better. My discussion with Colin earlier this evening confirmed it wasn't just me that found this to be the case.
